Welcome from the Chairs

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are very proud and honored to announce the international conference Polymers 2020: New Trends in Polymers Science: Health of the Planet, Health of the People, organized in collaboration with the MDPI open access journal Polymers. The conference will be held in Turin, Italy, on June 3–5, 2020.

Over the past 60 years, polymers have made an outstanding contribution to the development of modern society in every field. The substitution of traditional materials with tailored polymer systems in the most diverse applications has allowed us to overcome important technological challenges and improve the quality of life.

Today, however, polymeric materials face a new challenge: reconciling the technological progress and well-being of people with the preservation of the planet, from a circular economy perspective.

The purpose of the meeting is to bring together scientists from academia and industry to present leading-edge research on the advancements in polymer science and technology in all its main aspects, with a particular emphasis on those aiming to preserve and improve the health of the planet and of people, as per title. Both oral and poster contributions are welcome. The broad themes that will be addressed during the conference include synthesis, modification, and characterization of synthetic and natural polymers, polymers from green chemistry, polymer hybrids, nanocomposites, polymer biomaterials, polymers in drug delivery and tissue engineering, polymers for human health, bio-based and biodegradable polymers, polymer recycling and re-use, polymers for the environment, functional polymers, and polymers in energy, among others.

The conference follows the very successful meeting Polymers 2018: Polymers: Design, Function and Application held in March 2018, Barcelona, Spain.

Alexander Böker is director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP) and holds the Chair for Polymer Materials and Polymer Technology at the University of Potsdam, Germany. He studied chemistry at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA and received his PhD from University of Bayreuth in 2002 and his habilitation from the same university in 2007. From 2008-2015, he was deputy scientific director of DWI – Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials in Aachen. In 2015 he received a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council (ERC). His research interests include: synthesis and characterization of polyesters, development of polymers using biobased monomers, synthesis and characterization of nanocomposites, the use of polymers to remove contaminants and the use of polymers in tissue engineering and pharmaceutical applications. His work has been published in more than 365 scientific papers, with over 13500 references and h-index 63 (scopus). He participated in more than 50 research projects, has written 4 chapters in international scientific books and he holds 15 international patents and 2 Greek. He has participated in more than 200 international and 50 national conferences, having 150 oral presentations as a simple and invited speaker, and 250 poster presentations. He has been a reviewer in more than 150 international journals and is member of editorial committees in six scientific journals.

Claudio Gerbaldi is Professor of principles of chemistry for applied technologies and Chair of Chemistry from nine years. He is the leader of the Group for Applied Materials and Electrochemistry (GAME-Lab, https://www.facebook.com/GAMELabPoliTO) at the Department of Applied Science and Technology – DISAT. The specific mission of GAME Lab is the development and thorough characterization of innovative electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems, which are nowadays fundamental to exploit the full potential of future technologies requiring high performance, such as smart electronics, storage from renewables and electric transportation, with strong collaboration with academy/research centers worldwide and effective connections with industry and EU. He is author/co-author of about 135 scientific research articles published in international ISI journals with >1000 annual citation counts in recent years (>4700 total citations) and h-index 43 (source SCOPUS, 08/2019), 5 International granted patents, 4 research book chapters, and participated in > 60 national/international conferences (>80 oral talks and/or poster presentations), 12 as distinguished invited/keynote speaker. Among others, he has received the International “Roberto Piontelli” Award – International award delivered in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, for outstanding scientific or technological contributions in the field of electrochemistry for energy-related applications, corrosion or physical chemistry (2015) and the ‘‘UniCredit Award’’ for the Young Innovation in Research (2007).

Gaetano Guerra received his doctor degree in Chemistry under the direction of Paolo Corradini. He was researcher at Montedison and professor at the Naples University. Presently he is Professor of Macromolecular Chemistry, at the University of Salerno. Most of the scientific activity of Prof. Guerra has been devoted to theoretical and experimental studies relative to polymeric materials. This research activity is documented by more than 300 scientific papers on international journals and by many industrial patents. He is a member of Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and President of Italian Association of Chemistry.

Professor Tadahisa Iwata graduated from Faculty of Agriculture, Kyoto University in 1989. He studied in CERMAV-CNRS (Grenoble) as a French Government scholarship foreign student in 1992-93 and obtained his PhD degree in Wood Science & Technology from Kyoto University in 1994. He spent 10 years in RIKEN Institute, Japan, as a researcher and then vice-head of Polymer Chemistry Laboratory. In 2006, He became Associate Professor in The University of Tokyo, where he was promoted to Professor in 2012. Since 2013, He has been the Head of Department of Biomaterial Sciences. From 2018, he is an advisor to the President. His major interest and specialty are in polymeric materials, bio-based polymers, biodegradable plastics, polymer crystallography, and polymer physics. He has published more than 230 original papers, 60 reviews, 23 books, and 30 patents. He received The Award of the Society of Fiber Science and Technology, Japan (2006) and German Innovation Award, Gottfried Wagener Prize, Germany (2009) and The Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan (2019). He also serves as Editor in Polymer Degradation and Stability journal (Elsevier).

Dr. Kurtz is a Principal and the Director of Exponent's Biomedical Engineering practice. He serves as a part-time Research Professor and Director of the Implant Research Center at Drexel University's School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems. Dr. Kurtz’ research activities have emphasized point-of-care additive manufacturing of medical devices and implants; real-world clinical performance of medical devices, including orthopedic, spine, and cardiovascular implants, as assessed by human implant retrieval specimens, national implant registries, and national health care databases; clinical studies of medical devices; and the mechanical behavior of synthetic biomaterials. His recent research interests include 3D printing of high-temperature polymers, including PEEK, to create novel drug delivery devices that treat spine and orthopaedic implant infection. Dr. Kurtz is active in many professional societies, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Hip Society, the Knee Society, and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Dr. Kurtz has edited 10 books and written over 240 journal articles and 500 conference abstracts. He has co-edited STP 1591: Modularity and Tapers in Total Joint Replacements for the ASTM in 2015 and recently completed the PEEK Biomaterials Handbook, 2nd Edition, which was published in 2019.

His group has invented a myriad of nanomaterials with controlled properties for widespread use in applications related to plasmonics, electronics, photonics, photovoltaics, display, catalysis, fuel cells, nanomedicine, and regenerative medicine. As an example, his technology on silver nanowires has been commercialized for the manufacturing of flexible, transparent, and conductive coatings for applications such as touchscreen, flexible electronics, and photovoltaics. The gold nanocages invented by his group are enabling cancer theranostics. His group also made a broad range of original and important contributions to electrospinning and electrospun nanofibers for the development of a powerful technique for the fabrication of nanofibers with well-controlled properties. His group further explored the use of electrospun nanofibers as patches for wound dressing and as scaffolds for neural, orthopedic, and interface tissue engineering. His group greatly advanced this biomedical field by bringing all kinds of controls into the design and fabrication of patches/scaffolds, including their composition, porosity, structural order, pore structure, surface chemistry, mechanical strength, and capability to release growth factors. Xia has co-authored more than 770 publications in peer-reviewed journals, together with a total citation of more than 142,000 and an h-index of 190. He has been named a Top 10 Chemist and Materials Scientist based on the number of citation per publication. He has received a number of prestigious awards, including Materials Research Society Metal (2017), American Chemical Society National Award in the Chemistry of Materials (2013), NIH Director's Pioneer Award (2006), David and Lucile Packard Fellow in Science and Engineering (2000), NSF CAREER Award (2000). Registration

The registration fee includes attendance of all conference sessions, morning/afternoon coffee breaks and lunches, gala dinner on 4th June, conference bag and program book.

Participation to the conference is considered final only once the registration fees have been paid. The number of participants is limited: once the number of paid registrations reaches the maximum number of participants, unpaid registrations will be cancelled.

Please note that, in order to finalize the scientific program in due time, at least one registration by anyone of the authors, denoted as Covering Author, is required to cover the presentation and publication of any accepted abstract. Covering Author registration deadline is 3 May 2020. Your abstract will be withdrawn if your registration is not complete by this date.

Authors with multiple contributions: Please note that one author registration will cover only ONE accepted contribution. Authors presenting more than 1 contribution during the event will be charged 50 euro per additional abstract (e.g., 1 author with 2 abstracts: registration fee + 50 euro; 2 authors with 3 abstracts: 2 registration fees + 50 euro; etc.)

Certificate of Attendance: Upon request, the participants of the event will receive an electronic Certificate of Attendance by email once the event is concluded.

Polymers 2020 will accept abstracts only.
The accepted abstracts will be available online on Sciforum.net during and after the conference. Papers based on the accepted abstracts can be also published in the special issue "New Trends in Polymer Science: Health of the Planet, Health of the People".
Please note that abstract submission and conference registration are two separate processes.
Abstracts
  • Create an account on Sciforum.net and click "Submit New Abstract to Polymers 2020" on the left panel.
  • Choose a session which is best suited for your research.
  • Submit an abstract in English - the word limits are minimum 150 words and maximum 300 words. .
  • The deadline to submit your abstract is 15 February 2020. You will be notified by 3 April 2020 regarding the acceptance of your submission.
  • Upon submission, you can select if you also wish to be considered for oral presentation. Following assessment by the Chair, you will be notified by 3 April 2020 in a separate email whether your contribution has been accepted for oral presentation.

Poster

Torino Porta Susa station (Piazza XVIII Dicembre) is also connected to the most important towns of Europe, which are close by. Both stations are served by high-speed trains (FrecciaRossa and Italo).
Turin Caselle “Sandro Pertini” International Airport is 15 km from central Turin and there are direct connections to many major cities. From the airport, there are shuttle services to central Turin by bus and train (about 40 minutes). The Awards
Young Investigator Award
The award consists of 2500 Swiss Francs, a plaque, a waiver of the registration fees of the next Polymers conference in 2022 and a plenary presentation at the next conference. There will be a special session at the Polymers 2020 for the Young Investigator Award, at which point the selected candidates are requested to give a presentation of their research. Evaluation committees will attend the special session and decide which one will be granted the award.
